The Plan for the Keyhole Garden

So here is the plan for the new keyhole garden at Millwood Flower Farm. On the west outside row there will be blueberries and strawberries. I have read they are good companion plants, and should look really pretty together. Like I always say, “aesthetics matter.” Our goal is always to have everything be pleasing to the eye and elicit JOY. There are currently about 6 or 7 blueberries planted on that side. My hope is that I can successfully transplant some of them to give them more room and be able to plant a few new ones for a total of 10 to 12. My blueberry plants are about a foot apart now and I want to give them 3 feet apart. I really need to chat with our friends at Florida's Best Blueberry Farm about this, I think!

Lisianthus

The middle beds will be mostly flowers of varying types, with an herb or two sprinkled in. Right now we have lisianthus in one bed and another bed devoted to beloved perennial, yarrow. This weekend I want to prepare two beds to plant a beautiful red amaranth and giant marigold. I think it will be gorgeous in the fall! Of, course I’m keeping my sweet potato bed on the right side because sweet potatoes make me happy. I planted them last weekend and now I can look forward to their beautiful foliage and yummy treats.

Marigold and Amaranth seedlings ready to plant

On the eastside outside row I originally planned to put asparagus, but after a little research and thinking about the changing climate, I decided not to risk that much real estate on them. Instead, I am going to plant a salad bed of veggies like kale, lettuce, cucumbers, radishes, carrots and spinach.
