Blue Flowers in April & May

In April and May, we have a rainbow of shades available from our flower field, so I thought I would highlight a few by color range. Let’s start with purple and blue, because this may just be the best time of year to find blue flowers. On a near daily basis we are harvesting bachelor’s buttons. True, there are few pinks, but for the most part the blooms on these girls are cobalt blue. Blue flowers are eye-catching and really stand out when they are surrounded by softer colors. Another outstanding purple flower in our field is larkspur. I can’t help myself whenever I am showing off either bachelor buttons or larkspur, I just have to tell people how wonderfully these blooms dry. Their color stays absolutely true. With the rising temperatures, the larkspur will fade away. We still have quite a bit that has not bloomed, and we are holding out hope that the larkspur can hang on a few more weeks.

If you look in the left lower corner of the photo above, you will see a little peek of purple stock. In addition to the gorgeous petals and color, this is a fragrant flower. It comes in many colors besides purple, including white, which many wedding designers use in their work. Didiscus (blue lace flower), is a delicate, lacey, lavender treasure.

When the spring flowers are no longer in season, we hope to have lisianthus like the ones pictured below. Seth has successfully grown a good number of lisianthus from seed and they are now growing beautifully thanks to his friend, our farm helper, Natalie Dye, who planted them all. We hope when they bloom we will have stunning deep purple lisianthus like the one pictured above from a previous year.
